Clinical Hypnosis

“Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.”

~Shakespeare’s Hamlet

What is hypnosis?

Have you ever driven a familiar route to find that on arrival at your destination you have little or no recollection of your journey? Do you ever “lose yourself“ in the bath or “switch off” while listening to music? That’s hypnosis! Some people go into this state while exercising at the gym or jogging long distances. That’s hypnosis! Hypnosis is a natural human ability. Without going into hypnosis, people would not be able to learn and to focus their attention.

Hypnosis is an inner state of absorption, one in which you become less focused on the outer environment. You are not asleep nor unconscious but rather experience a “parallel awareness.” It happens all the time. Right now, for example, you are focusing your attention on your phone or computer screen. While you’ve been doing that, you have “forgotten” or “zoned out” the sensations of your feet on the floor. This, of course, is an essential skill. To be effective in any situation, we must narrow down our attention so we are less aware of irrelevant aspects of our experience. You can see this working when you are engrossed in a book or film and someone asks if you would like something to drink. You may have had the experience of not hearing someone at all or of being “semi-aware” that they said something but having no idea what it was! That is everyday hypnosis!
